Year One & Origin: In 1996 , local Oldtime Hockey organizer Terry Wright became a a cast-away from another Oldtimers team. So he phoned 15 hockey friends, guys that nobody wanted on their team. He formed the Kingston Leftover +50's Hockey Team, hence the name Leftovers. This group was so pitiful on the ice that teams would play us just so they could practice their power play for 50 minutes. Needless to say we became very discouraged in our first season.
Year Two: Terry was able to secure some late night ice and advertised for players over 40 years of age. The response was encouraging and five teams were formed. to create a league . A schedule was prepared , A drafting of teams format was employed and continues to this day , we even have a club slogan "Fun Along The Way " .
Year Three: News of the Leftovers started to spread and an established team called the Senior Nighthawkes came into our circle of hockey. They were a stronger team and only participated one year, but the concept of playing fun hockey again and providing an opportunity to participate in a competitive recreational and fun atmosphere and meet and make new friends was all that was required. We had beaten the odds.
Years Four through Seven: Interest dropped of a little in the middle years and we had to reduce our league to five teams.
Year Eight: Player registration increased immensely and we re-established the five team format. The Thirsty Knights group were re-united with the local Oldtimers hockey league.
Year Nine The five team structure continues, with a couple of new sponsors and some new players. The same purpose of providing a safe place to play recreational hockey remains .
Year Eleven (2008) : with the new Invista Centre ( four pad ) on steam we were able to secure one additional hour of ice , this provided our hockey porogram to increase to seven teams and more room for player's to re-activate to playing Leftovers hockey.
Other Things we Do:
Kingston Oldtimers Memorial Hockey Tournament: Through the hard work and efforts of the Kingston Leftovers Hockey Club this hockey tournament was created to remember local and area players who have died. Divisions are named in honor of each fallen player, and all proceeds are donated to the Kingston Autism Foundation. After reaaching our goal of $100,000 to the Kingston Childrens Cancer Fund we have started donations for Autism. Our first donation was $5,500 and the 2008 tournament contribution brings the total todate of $17,500. Once again thank you for your support.
'Fun Along The Way'- Golf Day: Past and present Leftovers participate in a annual fun game of golf on Wolfe Island, and to remember the Leftovers players who have passed away.
