PETER BRIERLEY    1952- 2003

 PROFILE
Peter Brierley was born in Kingston on April 5, 1952.  He is survived by his wife Jo-Ann, daughter Amanda and son Jamie.

During his twenty-seven year career with Corrections Canada, Peter worked at Collins Bay Institution as a Corrections Officer and at Joyceville Institution as a Living Unit Officer.  His last few years at Joyceville Institution were spent working in the Riverhill Therapeutic Community.

Peter had many interests such as hockey, fishing and BMX.  Peter’s career began with the Church Athletic League as a boy, and ended with the No Stars Old Timers Hockey team.  In all the years he played with the “No Stars”, he never missed his weekly hockey or tournaments and would play under any circumstances.  A few years ago, he had a kidney stone attack so severe that one of his teammates had to drive him from Alexandria Bay, New York to KGH for emergency treatment.  The hospital gave him Demerol and believe it or not, he returned to Alex Bay and played in the team’s next game that evening.

When Amanda and Jamie took up BMX racing, Peter joined the BMX Executive and for over 13 years, he was involved in all facets of this sport becoming known locally as Mr. BMX.  He had an amazing talent for visualizing and shaping the dirt into a fast, competitive, safe course that challenged all riders.  For him, BMX was a labour of love – he spent his vacations at the track, and travelled widely to attend races. Even from his hospital bed in the spring of 2004, he was ordering clay and equipment and organizing a weekend at the track with his BMX and “No Stars” friends to prepare for upcoming events.  His lifelong dream of BMX being added to the Olympic program has been realized with the sport making its debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  The BMX race track at Woodbine Park has been named “The Peter Brierley BMX Memorial Track”.
