Bill Gaffney #14
Wally Garden Maulers
1946-2005
Bill Gaffney was a ‘Wally Mauler’ for 20 years, having first started the team in the late 70’s when it was known as the ‘CNR team’, and when it became apparent that he was the only player on the team from CN, it was decided to rename the team the “Wally Garden Maulers” in the mid 80’s.
Bill was a man of few words, with a dry sense of humor, a sincere individual who was devoted to his family. Over the years, Bill’s love of hockey had involved him in the organization and coaching of minor hockey but he especially enjoyed participating as a hockey player. Bill was actively involved with the KMHA through the 80’s while his sons Billy and Ryan played hockey, he coached many teams from Novice through Bantam and served as a Convener and was always an avid supporter of his boys. Bill also enjoyed playing softball/baseball with the men’s league and coaching and convening KBA.
Bill retired from CNR after 39 years and was looking forward to skiing, boating, travelling and maybe even furthering his hockey career, but it wasn’t meant to be, cancer returned for the third time and this time there was no treatment, so 10 months after retiring Bill passed away, far too soon, on October 21, 2005 at the age of 58.
